Graphic designing ethics, moral and green design
Recently I have been into designing graphics for my private use. I've studied arts a few years ago and I've always had an artistic knack, a visual eye if will. Drawing, painting, sculpting, writing, music - all these things close to my heart. Walking around town I start to study architecture or advertisements without really wanting to - it just happens. Mostly I think about the composition (the order in which pieces of graphic are placed on the ad), the style in which a certain building has been built (what era of design, what the artist wanted to achieve with this entrance, the placing of greenery, is it built with glass or concrete)and also much thought goes to ethics of graphic design. The world is in turmoil - people are hungry, our climate is warming, wars, terrorists - and I'm sitting at home thinking why a logo I'm designing isn't working. I live in Finland where things are really good: schools are free (even universities), health care does not cost that much and it is available to everyone (normal people can live a happy life without ever bothering about insurances) and plenty of jobs for example. So I live a carefree life here designing my logos and not really worrying about what goes wrong with the world. Of course I do read about things that are happening and I watch news on TV and online but not really paying attention until it affects me directly. That is why I have thought about starting a new product line with 'green' things. Slogans, pictures - your general designs but about 'green' things. I love doing designs and I'm good at it and I sure would like keep doing it in the future so might as well contribute for the future of the planet. Stopping wars or ending hunger is way too much work for a lonely graphic designer so I won't concentrate on those too much. I'm no means belittling these topics - they just feel so out of reach. I will probably do a few pieces but my work will consist of 'green' subjects. In conclusion even graphic designers can contribute to important topics and even choose what kind of contribution they want to do. It can be that you only print on organic clothes, recycled paper, use organic inks, design 'green messages'. This is powerful because I you get people to wear your clothes that have a 'green' message you automatically get an audience when those people walk the streets (good chance that they come and ask about your designs too). |
